Ingredients

For the Salad
  • 1 (5 oz) can tuna drained (solid white albacore recommended)
  • 1 large cucumber diced (about 2 cups)
  • 1/4 red onion thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp fresh dill chopped (optional)
For the Dressing
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 tsp salt or to taste
  • 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper or to taste
Optional Add-ins
  • 1 ripe avocado diced
  • 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes halved
  • 2 tbsp capers drained
  • 1 celery stalk finely diced
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes for heat

Equipment

  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Small bowl for dressing
  • Cutting board
  • Chef's knife
  • Measuring spoons
  • Whisk or fork

Method

  1. Drain the tuna thoroughly and place it in a medium mixing bowl. Gently flake with a fork, maintaining some texture.
  2. Add diced cucumber and thinly sliced red onion to the bowl with the tuna.
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk together olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and freshly ground black pepper until emulsified.
  4. Pour the dressing over the tuna mixture and toss gently to combine.
  5. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed, adding more salt, pepper, or lemon juice to achieve your preferred flavor balance.
  6. If using fresh dill, sprinkle it over the salad and give it a final gentle toss.
  7. Serve immediately for the freshest texture, or refrigerate for 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.

Notes

  • For a milder onion flavor, soak sliced red onion in ice water for 5 minutes before adding to the salad.
  • This salad is best enjoyed within 2 days of preparation.
  • If meal prepping, keep the dressing separate until ready to serve.
  • Add any optional ingredients like avocado just before serving for best texture.
  • Use solid white albacore tuna for a milder flavor or chunk light tuna for a stronger taste.
